Matthew 27:32-56
|
Simon was forced to help Jesus carry the cross to a place called Golgotha. Jesus was given a mix of wine and other liquid in which he refused to drink. He was nailed to the cross and then they divided his garments. Roman soldiers sat and kept watch over him. The Romans placed his charge over his head, that was shortened to "INRI." Two revolutionaries were also crucified on either side of him. People who passed by mocked him. How could he be the Son of God when he was dying this horrific death? Darkness came over for the afternoon. At the end of the darkness, Jesus cried out for Elijah. A bystandard ran to get a sponge soaked with wine. There was an earthquake. The people watching him said "Truly, this was the Son of God" (Mt 28:54).
